It was an outstanding victory for the Falcons on Tuesday, as they snatched the win from the Taeguek Nangja with a 2-0 score line. After both losing their opening matches, pressure was mounting on the two teams to make a statement and the Falcons had the upper hand.
Nigeria went ahead when defender Kim Do-yeon volleyed past her own keeper. This followed by a brilliant goal by Barcelona forward, Asisat Oshoala which earned her the Player of the Match award. “We had more confidence when we scored the first goal. We tried to tell ourselves that we needed to give more, because one goal isn’t enough to decide the game and then I got the second goal” Asisat said in an interview with Fifa tv immediately after the match.
Nigeria will confirm a place in the knockout stage if they beat hosts France, one of the tournament favourites, on Monday (20:00 BST) in Rennes. "We already have a good team spirit but maybe this win will give us a little bit more. Now we go to play France, a really good team…If we can come out with a point everyone would be extremely happy" said Nigeria boss Thomas Dennerby.
